Hands-on with the Pacemaker DJ system

Engadget had a chance to get up close and personal with Swedish startup Tonium's portable DJ unit and paw this 120GB-storing mobile mixing and more device. Comparable in size to the PSP (a smidge smaller), the Pacemaker's integrated crossfader and multifunction touchpad at first blush provide a surprisingly intuitive way to control your mix. We're not gonna lie -- we kinda wish the touchpad worked more like a Kaoss pad than like ye olde iPod scroll wheel, but all the same it's pretty fun to get some pitch bending on with a device that fits in one hand. Also let's be honest, you're probably not gonna become the hottest thing in Ibiza with this thing, but at $700 it's a relatively low-cost convenient practice setup for DJs on the road or an attractive option for aspiring amateurs. Be sure to peep yourself some video after the break.

Zul Subvert - Subvert Sessions

Oh man... this mix just can't get off my head. Loop mode was on for this mix particularly. Expect a wide spectrum of sound packing into an hour. I wish it could have been longer, oh well, I believe it will only takes a maestro in order to produce such a good sh*t.

-- Profile --
I guess I've been lucky enough to be around music since 1991 (the punk/hardcore days) but DJ-wise, I got started around 1995/1996 was lucky enough to be drafted for a gig by Chris Ho even before I could mix. Needless to say I was completely rubbish, even if i played only ambient (mainly Global Communication and Vangelis)!

I listen to a lot of music so I can inspired from everything from Jeff Mills, LTJ Bukem (the reason I fell in love with drum & bass actually) to Depeche Mode.

To be honest I knock up tracks just for fun so really Im the last person to be giving advice! :p Ive only been fooling with Ableton in the last six months (after much prodding by Brown Club chief Aresha) but I love programmes like Ableton etc have made making music interesting even for technophobes like myself. I guess the biggest tip is to not be daunted by the technology. Have fun, do that and half the battle is won in my humble opinion.

Best outcome - not sure how I can answer that! But really, taking it easy and having fun usually helps :p

Peace and respect to the Boss and the Simpang / Tampines Teh O Ais Limau crew (they know who they are!)

Token multitouch screen shows us the future of DJing, today (video)

Think you know multitouch surfaces? Think again. We've just come across a video demo of the Token multitouch, erm, pedestal, which seems to have come straight from the future. A clear sheet of glass that beams out video from your computer and accepts touch inputs in return, the Token concept has been designed by a chap named Rodrigo hailing out of Chile. We know it uses a rear projector for its video, but other construction details are scarce at this point; what's really special here, however, is the way he combines it with a Traktor Pro controller titled Emulator, turning a few intelligent finger swipes into a kickass light-and-sound show. See it on video after the break.

Multitouch DJ table lets you swipe to rock

We just recently got a glimpse of one possible future of DJing, but our world has now already been turned upside down once again with this multitouch-enabled rig built by Gregory Kaufman. The big difference with this one, as you can probably guess, is that it employs a gesture-based interface that lets you spin the virtual turntables and use a variety of taps and finger swipes to replicate the main functions of a regular DJ deck. What's more, Kaufman says that the only gear a DJ would have to carry is a USB drive with their own music and settings, which they'd simply plug into the multitouch table at a club -- assuming the idea catches on, that is. Top top things off, the system would also be able to accommodate regular DJ gear for some added flexibility, and even provide enough room for two DJs if you're looking to battle or share the stage. Head on past the break to check it out in action.

Rafi Dean - Reflection

1 part deep house, 2 parts electronica, a pinch of experimental ambient soundscapes, and a side serving of found sounds and techno.

Together with local DJs from Frontallabs, Rafi has spun at the top clubs in Singapore under the guise of for[e]sight. Clubs conquered include Zouk, Phuture, Homeclub, Centro360 and The Liquid Room.

In July 2004, Rafi made his debut appearance in Melbourne, Australia for a one-off progressive gig; Sideways @ Tilt, playing alongside Ivan Gough and Sean Quinn. Upon his return to Singapore, he clinched the Runner-up trophy in the Juice DJ Quest 2004, and was subsequently awarded Juice Magazine (Singapore) – Best New Local DJ in December 2004.

In 2005, he began concentrating on performing a hybrid DJ set, mixing on Ableton Live and collaborating with DJs & musicians. This fluid performance brought Rafi and his team (Marc Lim on guitars, DJ Weili on decks + guitars) to the Semi-Finals of the Heineken Thirst 2005 competition in Singapore, and a special invitation to perform together with local darlings PopMyCherry at the Singapore Spotlight at the Hong Kong Fringe Club in January 2006.

2006 also saw Rafi helming the decks as resident DJ at Beach Club in Melbourne, Australia dishing out a variety of music ranging from jazz, downtempo, house, breaks and techno.

Rafi has since been working on both live electronic sets and reactive visuals. 2010 saw the beginning of local audio-visual super-collective SYNDICATE, a platform for exploring the future sounds and visual projection experiments. The monthly residency at Homeclub has been a fresh inclusion in the Singapore club scene, bringing things to the next level.

DJ Reiki - Hare Tango

Born and raised in Singapore. It was in 1999 when DJ Reiki stumbled upon the hard hops of Omar Santana and the nu-skool breaks of Adam Freeland. Her style of DJing gradually developed, resulting in sets of high impact tunes, frantic beats, swirling analogues and monster hooks.

Since Reiki’s first well-received club appearance in Phuture and her debut promo mixset entitled Equlibrium 001: Dawn of Breaks, she has moved on to spin for leading local dance music events such as Sirens, Phuture Breaks, Guerilla, Pop My Cherry and 44Beatz.

With a knack for dropping wicked tunes that heat up the dancefloors, she has supported drum n bass DJs including Aphrodite, Mickey Finn & John B as well as breaks heavyweight, General Midi (UK). On top of that, her growing reputation had earned her guest spots in other parts of Asia where she headlined Breaks Centro & Flava Breaks in Kuala Lumpur, Clash of The Titans Party in Kota Kinabalu, Salem Innovation Sessions & Audio Vixen in Hong Kong and Sound Element's 'Breakzelecta' in Bangkok.

Scenewise, Reiki was a pillar in gathering enthusiasts to document the Breaks music movement in the form of writing articles, music reviews, video interviews and podcast production in the now defunct Breakinasia site. More recently, her affiliation with 44Beatz parties has given her a scope to indulge in a wider musical spectrum and step up beyond the sound of breakbeat.

Never the one to be afraid of stepping outside the comfort zone , she delivered shimmering sets of house anthems and electro thumpers at the local iconic gay club, Taboo and Pure room at Ministry Of Sound, much to the delight of the punters on the floor.

Come 2010, expect more surprises in the pipeline from the pimptress. For a start, she is back hosting her monthly Fixation show at the underground Meshradio station, whipping up the cream on fresh nu tunes as well as lime-lighting mixsets of undiscovered gems culled from around the world.

Alongside the radioshow, catch her sharing deck duties with Helipad Resident, Special K at the Amped Up parties & with local DJ hero, Brendon P at Hare Tango nights. More whipcream?

Chee Who? - Trance Aural Sessions 001

Chee Hoo welcomes the crowd to groove and feel for the music, at least he thinks that’s what trance should be about! Professing a love for the genre, he swears by online broadcasts of radio shows almost every single week by his DJ influences. From a teenage listener of EDM many years back, he has taken the step to DJing and derives considerable joy in playing his favorite style of music to the masses.

Moving on from his debut at Home Club, he scored victory at NECDC Music Mix 2006 (Open Category), emerging as Champion as well as being a Finalist @ SAFRA DJ Battle 2008. Apart from playing regular sessions at Blu Jaz Café, he has graced the decks at Sessions @ Phuture, Supperclub, and has played at nationwide events such as the National Day Fringe Festival.

Besides being part of the local music collective COUP, he also led student's DJ club during his days of study such as Republic Polytechnic's Electronic Music Production (EMP) and NUS's SynQ DJs. A strong advocate of EDM, not just only trance music alone, he hopes that the local music scene will grow to give chance to aspiring DJs & musicians to make their mark.
