DJ Enferno - Evolution

If DJ Enferno was only known as the guy Madonna picked to cut up samples and assist in remix productions for her shows, helping to make the Sticky & Sweet Tour the highest-grossing tour of the year, he could look comfortably back on an illustrious and successful career. But for Enferno, a veteran club DJ, turntablist, production guru and creator of the much-lauded Live Remix Project (more on that later), the tour is simply the natural progression to a consistently bourgeoning career.

In 1999, Enferno would enter his first DMC competition, the most prestigious in the world. While he didn’t win the first year, he would spend countless hours working on his routines, scoring higher with each passing year, until finally winning the U.S. Championship in 2003.

Enferno hung up his battle needles in 2004, and continued to increase his exposure in the club world, touring all over the USA, Asia, and parts of Europe, even making a feature appearance on MTV’s Direct Effect in 2004. By 2006, Enferno was on top of the club world with his multi-genre open-format style on the decks.

Thus spawned the Live Remix Project (LRP) in 2006, a “one-man symphony” incorporating turntables, instruments, effects and samplers that combines musical virtuosity with technical proficiency. LRP draws on a myriad of Enferno’s skills (Check out liveremixproject.com for a sample.)

Today, DJ Enferno is showing no signs of resting on his laurels. In 2009, Enferno has already successfully combined his club mixing with his Live Remix techniques in a hybrid “DJ vs. Musician vs. Producer” performance suitable for both clubs and live stages. On the production end, Enferno is building on his tour experience, hitting the studio hard. Look out for more remix releases by Enferno into 2010.

Adrian Wee - AR vol. 30

Adrian Wee is no stranger in the local club scene. Starting off as a DJ 10 years ago, Adrian steadily earned his stripes within the local club circuit and established himself as one of the finest in the country.

His first residency was at Nox in 2001. During the same year, Adrian won the title as ‘Best Upcoming DJ’ during the ‘Party Animal Awards’, and moved on to play for almost every promoter and club in Singapore, including NYE 2002 Festival held in Sentosa, alongside the best global talents like John Digweed, Technasia Charles Siegling, Kosheen and Christian Smith. The event attracted a crowd of more than 10 000.

Moving on to a residency at The Liquid Room on 2002, Adrian wasted no time initiating the crowds towards his musical style. He transformed his Saturday nights into a wild ride which his signature energetic foray into the flavours of House, Electro, Techno. The very same year, he was awarded ‘Best Local DJ’ in club magazine ‘JUICE’.

Over the years, Adrian has also secured residencies at clubs such as Attica Too, KM8 and St James Power Station. His contribution to the industry landed him yet another award in 2007, ‘Best DJ’ in the Motorola ‘Super-Style Mix Awards’, where winners were determined by a public online polling system.

Adrian’s interests lie beyond DJing- he has constantly been involved in other aspects of nightlife. Adrian took on the additional role of Marketing Manager at The Liquid Room for three years and, in 2004, started a local Indie-Disco night called Poptart.

POPTART was the first majorly successful event for Adrian and was also the first of its kind in for the local club scene, and was highly commended for its fresh and bold approach of bringing alternative rock and electro to the dancefloors.

POPTART was held in different venues, from small bar/club environments to high profile outdoor festivals like Baybeats and Mosaic at The Esplanade, attracting crowds from 200 to the thousands. POPTART was mentioned and lauded constantly in music and entertainment media, and in 2005, was picked as ‘Best Local Club Night’ and came runner-up as ‘Most Up-For-It Crowd’ in JUICE Magazine’s ‘Best of 2005’ awards.

Adrian is currently Marketing Manager and Resident DJ at The Butter Factory, taking care of DJ bookings, promotions, branding, identity and music direction.

With a DJ career which started back in 1999, DJ Itchi aka Jason Teo has graced the decks of numerous parties at some of the most prestigious clubs from Zouk Club, Centro 360, Liquid Room, Nox, Milk Bar, Insomnia Café, Dbl O, Home Club, Hacienda, Mimolette, Butter Factory to Cafe Del Mar and oversea gigs (toured as Clash The Disko Kids) armed with with an arsenal of tune with genres ranging from progressive house, electro, breaks and trance.

Not only is Itchi the JUICE Mag DJ Quest 2005 winner, he also went on later to impress the industry critics at the inaugural Pioneer Pro DJ Digital Battle competition held in Zouk Singapore and eventually became winning this competition. Representing the island at the Regional Finals held in Zouk KL later on, Itchi clinched the runner-up position. You can only expect a mural of sounds when Itchi goes behind the decks!

Pioneer blings out HDJ-1000 headphones - Limited Edition

The thing with headphones, and sound equipment in general, is that if you get the design right the first time, you don't leave yourself much room for significant upgrades down the line. Pioneer seems to have fallen into that trap with its HDJ-1000 set of cans, which are today getting rehashed in a pair of new shades: the extrovert gold number above and an understated all-black look. Pioneer hasn't left the innards completely unretouched, however, as it has nipped and tucked a few bits to allow better low-range reproduction and a more comfortable fit overall.

“Much like our players and mixers, Pioneer headphones are designed for both style and performance. We have a versatile line-up of headphones that are sure to complement many DJ levels. The new HDJ-1000s will not only catch your eye, but also please your ears,” said David Arevalo, senior marketing manager, Professional Sound and Visual Division for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

Many DJs are as critical of the look of their gear as they are with its audio performance. The HDJ-1000 headphones provide the high-quality sound that DJs expect as well as choices of colors and styles that make a fashion statement. The HDJ-1000 headphones come in two new colors, black and gold, in addition to the original chrome model. The black version resonates with a more sophisticated look, while the gold version provides a more glitzy style.

To obtain the best audio reproduction possible, the drivers in the HDJ-1000 headphones were tuned to deliver more impact in the lower bass frequencies of music. Its thick 38 micrometers diaphragm and 1.5 mm voice coil are more efficient in generating the critical midrange and mid-bass frequencies in music and produce a more linear response even at high volume levels.

Furthermore, the mono/stereo selector circuit was modified to obtain clearer playback, especially in the midrange frequencies. With this change, the headphones deliver sounds such as bass drums, snare drums and cymbals with more impact.

For maximum comfort, the headphones use low rebound urethane for the ear pads providing a better fit and increased comfort when used for long DJ sessions. Along with the urethane pads, the design of the headphones wrap around the ears to achieve excellent sound insulation, making monitoring effortless even in the noisiest environments.

Both the HDJ-1000 limited edition sets will be available in December for $209.

Clash The Disko Kids - Wonders Of The Deep Mix

Clash The Disko Kids (CTDK) is a Singapore electro-techno-house duo consisting of DJ Kurt and Weili. Together as Clash The Disko Kids, they have been formidable on the dance floors as Singapore’s most popular electronic group. With over 15 years turntable experience between them, and a blatant disregard for music genres, they are known for incorporating a strong rock influence into their sets and image.

A CTDK set is like one big lesson in the history of electronic music in one night! You can only expect a mural of sounds when CTDK go behind the decks. Out of nowhere, the duo seemed to have emerged out of the concrete jungle and reinvented the clubbing landscape in Singapore, putting their own sick twists towards music such as adding samples, accapellas and sound fx to their DJ sets and just about everything around it to put smiles on the clubbers’ faces and hands in the air. The result is something really quite exciting and definitely very refreshing!
